Smith Hill CDC is a community development corporation focusing on affordable housing and community services in a multiracial/multiethnic neighborhood adjacent to the state capitol building in Providence, Rhode Island. They have completed numerous projects offering both rental and homeownership opportunities for low- and moderate-income families and individuals, primarily by redeveloping blighted buildings and lots. Two current projects involve the conversion and construction of mixed-use buildings to provide housing, community space, and offices for social service agencies benefiting “transitioning aging youth” (aged between 16 and 24) who are leaving foster care or juvenile detention facilities, have run away from home or dropped out of school, or struggle with disabilities – all previously or at risk of being homeless. Our loan provides some cash flow support, allowing Smith Hill to keep these and other projects they have in the pipeline on schedule before federal, state, and/or city funding is released to complete them.
