Juanita Morrow Nelson (August 17, 1923 – March 9, 2015) was “an ardent pacifist, war tax resister, civil rights activist and supporter of local, organic agriculture.”[1] Juanita was a mentor to Equity Trust’s founder Chuck Matthei, and her deeply held values helped to shape Equity Trust as an organization. We wish to honor Juanita’s tremendous life.
May 30th Memorial Celebration of the Life of Juanita Nelson
There was a memorial celebration of the amazing and inspiring life of Juanita Nelson on Saturday, May 30, at the Greenfield Middle School, 195 Federal Street in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The celebration was preceded by a New Orleans-style jazz procession from the Greenfield Farmers’ Market (next to the Town Common at Main Street and Bank Row) to the Middle School, a distance of half a mile. Juanita and Wally Nelson co-founded the Farmers’ Market in 1974 and sold their produce there every Saturday for almost three decades. At the conclusion of the celebration, there was a time for informal socializing and story-tellling in the Middle School cafeteria.
