Roots Farm

Roots Farm is a small regenerative agriculture farm in Washington State that raises produce, beans, and bio-regionally adapted seeds on two acres and pigs and goats on eight acres, and makes soap from lard and candles from beeswax.  The farm emphasizes food access and community service, providing 90% of what it grows to local food banks in Kitsap County and contributing to Kitsap Harvest, a local gleaning nonprofit.

The farm also participates in Washington State University’s Farm Mentor program, teaching interns and future farmers about no-till farming; and conducts grant-funded research on biochar, bokashi (a Japanese soil amendment process), and diversion of food waste to farms.  Over the next couple of years, the farm will be converted to a nonprofit business model focusing on education and outreach with the goal of empowering people to grow their own food.  The long-term vision includes installing a commercial kitchen to prepare healthy meals for distribution to the homeless, homebound elderly, and convalescent patients living at home.

In 2024 we made a loan to finance the building of a processing facility funded by a state farm infrastructure grant.
