The Lockhart Family Farm is a small family farm in Caroline County, Virginia, dedicated to a triple bottom line of social and environmental returns along with profitability. In addition to heirloom vegetables, flowers, fruits, value-added products such as soaps and preserves, it raises heritage pigs and turkeys on a CSA-like model in which consumers purchase an animal at the beginning of a growing season and make regular payments to support the farm while the animals forage in their natural habitats on a rotation through the woodland that makes up part of the property. Additionally, the Lockharts conduct farm-to-school and homesteading workshops, donate produce to local food banks, and are developing an on-the-job skills training program for long-term unemployed people. In 2013, they received a loan to facilitate capital improvements on their farm.
