New York Times opinion piece advocates for affordable farms

In their “Keep Farmland for Farmers” commentary in the NY Times, Lindsey Lusher Shute and Benjamin Shute offer a farmer’s perspective on why traditional conservation easements are often insufficient for keeping farms in farming, reinforcing Equity Trust’s message that farms are only truly protected if they are kept affordable for farmers. Lindsey and Ben are farmers at Hearty Roots CSA in Clermont, Columbia County, NY and co-founders of the National Young Farmers Coalition. The Equity Trust is pleased to be collaborating with the National Young Farmers Coalition in offering guidance to land trusts around the country on methods for preserving permanently affordable working farms.
